Conservatory, Windows and Doors for your Potters Bar property

Potters Bar is situated on the Great North Road, one of two road routes from the City of London to the north of England. The road was originally numbered as the A1, and later the A1000.

Potters Bar used to be part of Middlesex and formed the Potters Bar Urban District of that county from 1934. From 1894 to 1934 its area had formed the South Mimms Rural District. In 1965 the district was transferred to Hertfordshire while most of the rest of Middlesex became part of Greater London.

The urban district covered an area of 6,129 acres. In 1939 it had a population of 13,681, increasing to 24,613 in 1971. In 1974 the urban district was abolished and the area became part of the borough of Hertsmere. Having been part of Middlesex, the area continued to form part of the Metropolitan Police District; with the creation of the Greater London Authority it was transferred to the Hertfordshire Constabulary in 2000.

Wrotham Park estate home of the Byng family sits within Potters Bar and Barnet on 2,500 acres of land. The Byng family still own a lot of land in the Potters Bar area and The Admiral Byng Pub in Darkes Lane is named after Admiral John Byng who was executed for failing orders in the Minorca campaign. Byng is best known for failing to relieve a besieged British garrison during the Battle of Minorca at the beginning of the Seven Years War. Byng had sailed for Minorca at the head of a hastily assembled fleet of vessels, some of which were in poor condition. He fought an inconclusive engagement with a French fleet off the Minorca coast, and then elected to return to Gibraltar to repair his ships. Upon return to Britain, Byng was court martialled and found guilty of failing to do his utmost to prevent Minorca falling to the French. He was sentenced to death and, after pleas for clemency were denied, was shot dead by a firing squad on 14 March 1757.

A little about Potters Bar

Potters Bar is located on the Great North Road, which is one of two roads from the City of London to the north of England. The road was originally numbered as the A1, and after the A1 was designated as a motorway it was renamed the A1000.

Potters Bar used to be part of Middlesex and was also policed by the Metropolitan Police Service, but following a re shuffling of boundary lines it became part of the borough of Hertsmere. In 2000 the policing of Potters Bar was taken over by Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Potters Bar is situated close to the A1(M) and the M25 motorways, so is favoured by commuters who travel into the capital and surrounding areas for work.

The Wyllyotts Theatre is in Potters Bar and has a 421 capacity for shows and cinema, with retractable seating plus conference and meeting rooms. Nearby is the Old Manor Public House and Restaurant that used to form part of the local manor house.
