Conservatory plants: Bringing the outside in for your Aston home

Conservatory plants tend to be rather delicate and would rarely survive in the garden but they will happily tolerate a frost free environment of a conservatory and only require additional heat in very cold spells. Conservatories come in lots of shapes and sizes, so there may not always be room for some of the larger architectural conservatory plants.

Most people love to spend time in the garden, pottering around and pruning a plant hear or there, whereas others just like to relax and snooze away for a couple of hours. Unfortunately one aspect of spending time in the garden, surrounded by lovely plants can be ruined for many because of insects. Those pesky knats, wasps, ants and any other creepy crawly that can make your garden time a living nightmare. Worse still, those unwanted bugs buzzing around you and landing on your food if you wish to eat al fresco can be enough to drize many people back indoors. A conservatory changes all that!

With a conservatory you don't need to miss out on the joys of the plant world just because of our six legged friends. Having a meal, a relaxing snooze or just appreciating the outdoors from the inside is all possible with a conservatory, and best of all you get to control the bug situation. Also, let's not forget that for some, biting or stinging bugs are not just a nuisance, they can literally be killers. A good number of people are so allergic to certain bites or stings that they only have a matter of seconds to act and self medicate following a sting, another good reason for the controlled and safe environment of a conservatory.

It is such a joy to be able to view your beautiful garden from a protected environment, but you may even decide that you would like some plants that wouldn't survive in your garden to be growing in your conservatory. There are many bulbs, shrubs and even climbing and architectural plants that really can enhance a conservatories look and feel.

Some great plant choices for your Aston conservatory

  • BILLARDIERA longiflora: Also known as Climbing blueberry, Purple appleberry. This plant has creamy white flowers followed by bright blue berries.
  • PASSIFLORA antioquiensis: Also known as Red banana passion flower. These have massive hanging rose red flowers with a violet corona. Quite a delicate plant unless kept in mild locations but a fantastic plant for your Aston conservatory.
  • PLUMBAGO auriculata: Also known as Cape leadwort. A beautiful blue Plumbago. This climber is suitable for pots in the conservatory or as a greenhouse climber on some trellis.
  • CLIVIA miniata: Also known as a Fire lily. This plant flowers bright orange with a yellow throat but can be variable when raised from seed. A very good conservatory or pot plant for the house when in flower.
  • What about something to go with your Gin and Tonic? Eureka Lemons: This vigorous and productive lemon tree has good sized fruit with lots of juice and few seeds. Although citrus are not hardy in Britain they can easily be grown in pots outdoors in summer as long as they are brought into a cool, light, but frost free place for the winter, a cool conservatory is ideal. Fragrant flowers appear all year round especially in late winter so they often flower and fruit at the same time.

North or South facing conservatory for best results?

Conservatories always used to have a reputation for being too cold in winter, and too hot in summer, but new glazing techniques will enable you to enjoy more ambient temperatures all year round. If you are lucky enough to have a choice of where your conservatory will be sited, we suggest that a north facing conservatory is probably best for plants whereas a south facing conservatory suits us the most.
